In the UK, 20ft container cafés have increasingly been used as a potential "first location–validation–replication" model for small and micro businesses. In Cornwall, Old Foundry Coffee was reportedly started by former primary school teacher Amelia Smith in 2022 with a single container, operating as a takeaway coffee and sandwich outlet in the Tregoniggie Industrial Estate.
By 2025, she had reportedly secured a £25,000 loan through the UK Start Up Loans programme and opened a second 20ft container café at Kernick Business Park in Penryn. The new location included a service window, a fitted kitchen, and an outdoor seating area, while the business expanded from one employee to five.
A similar trend can be seen at Hailey Park in Cardiff, where a 20ft container café has been planned next to a children's play area. The project is expected to create two full-time positions as well as several part-time jobs, with opening hours covering 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays and full-day service at weekends.
A common feature of these projects is the use of a single 20ft unit as the minimum viable commercial space. Rather than committing to a large-scale permanent building from the outset, operators can use a relatively small footprint and limited ground works to test the location, menu, and daily operating model before deciding whether to replicate the concept at additional sites.
