Container Pools in Germany: Steel Structure Certification is the Entry Ticket; Water Quality Standards are the Baseline
Requirements for container pools in the German market focus on two key areas: steel structure manufacturing certification and hygiene compliance for materials in contact with water. Neither is optional; both serve as mandatory thresholds for market entry.
EN 1090: Mandatory EU Certification for Steel Structures
Since July 2014, EN 1090 has replaced DIN 18800-7 as the mandatory certification standard for steel structure manufacturing in the EU. Any steel or aluminum structure entering the EU market-including the container pool shell itself-must obtain EN 1090 certification. This covers welding procedure specifications, welder qualifications, and corrosion protection systems. For container pools, this means the factory's welding quality system must pass an EXC (Execution Class) audit, and welding records for every exported batch must be traceable.
KTW-BWGL: Compliance for Materials in Contact with Water
Surface materials that come into contact with pool water must meet the hygiene assessment requirements set by the German Environment Agency (UBA) under KTW-BWGL. Specific tests include migration testing for organic substances (DIN EN 12873-2) and overall migration testing (EU Regulation 10/2011, with a limit of ≤10 mg/dm²). Polyurea coatings are a common choice for container pool linings; however, there are significant differences in cost and water-contact approval between aromatic polyurea (such as MDI-based systems) and aliphatic polyurea. Uncertified polyurea coatings may suffer from issues such as delamination or substance leaching.
Electrical and Safety Standards
Electrical installations for pools in Germany are governed by DIN VDE 0100-702, which applies to low-voltage electrical systems in swimming pools and aquatic environments. Structural safety for pool equipment and water circulation systems adheres to the EN 15288-1/2 standards. For products equipped with counter-current units, the IP protection rating, insulation class, and thermal protection configuration of the pump and motor must be verified against VDE requirements during the equipment selection phase.
**Checklist for Exports to Germany**
For container pools shipped to Germany, the product documentation package must include: the EN 1090 certificate (factory-level), a KTW-BWGL (or equivalent) water-contact test report for the polyurea coating, and a VDE declaration of conformity for electrical equipment. Missing any of these items could hinder customs clearance or on-site acceptance.
