This 20HQ shipping container café, custom-designed for a commercial street, adopts a standard shipping container as its core structure. By leveraging mature modification techniques and high-quality material selection, it achieves a dual breakthrough in practicality and aesthetics while retaining its industrial essence. Two sets of customized units are strategically positioned at high-traffic spots-one at the street entrance and the other at the alley end-and the robust container construction serves as the solid cornerstone for its sustainable operation.
The 20HQ shipping container, as the renovation base, inherently boasts structural advantages that far surpass ordinary buildings. Its main frame is crafted from Q235B high-strength steel, which features a moderate carbon content and a tensile strength of 375-500MPa. This material can easily withstand outdoor wind and rain erosion as well as collisions and pressures during daily use. The original corrugated steel plates of the container are 2.0mm thick; after the hot-rolling forming process, they not only exhibit excellent deformation resistance but also form natural structural stiffeners. This enables the renovated café to withstand level-8 gales and minor earthquakes without the need for additional load-bearing frames, enhancing safety by over 40% compared to traditional light-steel structure shops.
In terms of wall surface treatment, the project team adhered to the principle of "retaining the base and refining details," maximizing the value of the original materials while enhancing texture. First, a sandblasting process is used to remove rust, scale, and old paint layers from the container surface. The quartz sand used for sandblasting has a particle size controlled between 0.8-1.2mm, which can thoroughly clean the steel surface without causing excessive wear. Subsequent phosphating treatment forms a dense phosphate protective film on the steel surface, effectively blocking contact with air and moisture and fundamentally preventing future rusting. The primer selected is an epoxy zinc-rich primer with a zinc content of over 80%, providing excellent cathodic protection. The topcoat adopts outdoor-specific fluorocarbon paint, which boasts exceptional weather resistance-it remains stable within a temperature range of -40℃ to 60℃ and exhibits strong UV aging resistance, ensuring no fading or cracking of the wall surface within five years. After these multiple processes, the originally rough container wall becomes smooth and flat with a delicate touch, while retaining the unique texture of steel.
To meet the operational needs of a café, the container structure has been specially optimized. CNC plasma cutting technology is applied at the opening positions, resulting in smooth, burr-free cuts with an error controlled within ±1mm, laying a precise foundation for subsequent door and window installation. The cut edges are reinforced with angle steel welding, and the welds undergo ultrasonic flaw detection to ensure no insufficient or missing welding. The bottom of the container is paved with 12mm-thick multi-layer solid wood boards, covered with food-grade epoxy resin flooring-this material is oil-resistant, easy to clean, and meets the hygiene requirements of catering establishments. Meanwhile, four 10-ton load-bearing universal adjustable feet are installed at the bottom of the container, facilitating on-site installation and positioning while avoiding corrosion caused by direct contact between steel and the ground.
The interior space also features meticulous craftsmanship. Environmentally friendly E0-grade ecological boards are used for interior decoration, with formaldehyde emission ≤0.124mg/m³, ensuring safe indoor air quality. The lighting system combines anti-glare LED downlights and track spotlights, with a color rendering index (Ra) ≥90, which can truly restore the colors of coffee and desserts. The core window area adopts double-layer insulated tempered glass, 5mm thick, with inert gas filled between the layers-this design provides both thermal insulation and excellent sound insulation. The main ordering window and secondary pickup window are spaced 1.5 meters apart; combined with the custom-made stainless steel operation platform, they form an efficient food pickup flow, avoiding congestion during peak hours.
These two container cafes have now completed commissioning and are about to settle in the core areas of the commercial street. Their solid steel base, refined surface craftsmanship, and user-friendly interior modifications enable them to operate stably in outdoor environments for a long time while attracting customers with their unique industrial aesthetics. For business needs rooted in high-traffic locations, this container space, supported by core craftsmanship, is undoubtedly an optimal solution that combines cost-effectiveness and practicality.
